GETTING THE RIDE THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU

Bilstein mono-tube gas pressure shock absorbers are available in a wide variety of sizes and stiffness settings, depending upon thevehicle type and use. All Bilstein shocks absorbers instantaneously self-adjust to changing road surfaces; in addition, their performance does not gradually decline from age, use or heat, requiring no compensating manual adjustments as with conventional multi-tubeshocks. Shock stiffness settings are divided into five usage categories shown below.

SPORT (S) - B8

For the performance-minded driver, Bilstein “Sport” shocks deliver absolute mastery of the road surface. Designed to push a car’s suspension to its performance peak, these shocks are well suited for use with special springs, anti-sway bars or other suspension upgrades.

HEAVY DUTY (HD) - B6

For most vehicles including full-size sedans, SUVs and trucks. These shocks provide improved handling and stability without sacrificing ride comfort. They offer super damping ability that makes them ideal for heavy hauling for occasional off-road use, while maintaining and exceptional “street” ride.

COMFORT (C) - B4

For the driver who wants maximum ride comfort, with the virtual elimination of “bottoming out” and vehicle sway. These shocks generally maintain and, in many cases, enhance a vehicle’s original ride qualities while increasing road-handling and overall stability.

5100 SERIES

For specific manufactured lift kits utilizing the stock OEM mounting configuration. Self-adjusting deflective disc valving, independent rebound and compression with superior control for larger diameter tires.

RALLE, RACE

For rigorous demands of driving competition. Their success should be measured by the unprecedented levels of acceptance and use by professional drivers in virtually all major Motorsports. Include such features as spherical bearings, adjustable spring seats longer or shorter than standard dimensions. *Not suited for street use.

TWIN TUBE TECHNOLOGY

TOURING CLASS (TC)

Bilstein Touring Class original equipment replacement twin tube gas pressure shocks and struts feature the same German engineering and quality as the world famous Bilstein Monotube Gas Pressure Shocks in a competitively priced twin-tube design.

PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION SYSTEM

Bilstein has developed the ultimate automotive performance suspension systems. To ensure maximum performance, these systems utilize superior Bilstein mono-tube gas shocks, featuring the largest available piston diameter for greater sensitivity and precise control, patented digressive piston head design, and deflective disc valving that instantly reacts to changing road input. From street performance, to competition ready, these suspension systems are available in three levels:

BTS – BILSTEIN TUNED SUSPENSION, is a high performance system with sport tuned mono-tube gas shocks and matched lowering springs. The system includes 4 coil springs with performance directed spring rate and patented mono-tube gas pressure shock absorbers.

PSS – PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION SYSTEM, is an ultra high performance ride height adjustable suspension system featuring performance valved mono-tube gas shocks. The system includes coil-over and standard mono-tube gas shocks with performance level valving along with application specific rate coil springs.

PSS9/PSS10 – PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION SYSTEM WITH 9/10 DAMPING ADJUSTMENTS, is the “race inspired” fully  adjustable ride height system featuring mono-tube gas shock absorbers with precise damping adjustments. The system includes adjustable mono-tube gas shock absorbers with adjustable compression and rebound settings from comfort to competition, front and rear application specific, progressive rate springs allow accurate adjustment of vehicle ride height and center of gravity for the level of performance you seek.

ERC – ELECTRONIC RIDE CONTROL® SYSTEM, allows the driver to electronically select between a comfort oriented or a significantly firmer, aggressive performance damping mode with a simple push of the dash mounted button. The integrated control unit switches the damping settings on all four shocks/struts in fractions of a second to deliver the handling characteristics you desire.

ABOUT BILSTEIN - Synonymous With Innovation and High Quality Since 1873

August Bilstein, a German entrepreneur, opened a foundry and galvanizing factory for the production of residential window hardware under the name AUBI (for “August Bilstein”) in 1873. The AUBI company grew in size and stature. Many innovations and patents were soon developed, building a foundation for the success of this new company. During this time frame, high-quality and innovative products became the credo of AUBI.

Hans Bilstein, the 25-year-old son of the founder August Bilstein, took control of the firm in 1919 and was responsible for the growth and diversification of the company over the following half century.

August Bilstein struck a joint venture with the Levator Lifting Gear Company in Berlin in 1927 and one year later entered the auto industry making car bumpers. August Bilstein became Europe’s first supplier of chrome plated car bumpers in mass production for automobile manufacturers including Audi, Daimler-Benz and others.

After taking over Levator in 1930, Bilstein began their own production of lifting jacks and cranes. Several years later, Bilstein became a primary supplier of car jacks as original equipment to the auto industry, a position they continue to retain today in Europe.

With the window hardware and jack and crane business in place, August Bilstein made a historic decision in 1954 by entering the automotive shock absorber business. They perfected the monotube gas pressure shock absorber, a new design which revolutionized the shock absorber industry.

Over the next 12 years, August Bilstein established 16 worldwide patents on the development of their monotube gas pressure shock absorber design. They worked closely with Daimler-Benz and in 1958 Bilstein became standard equipment on all Mercedes-Benz models, beginning an association that continues today.

To further strengthen their position with automotive manufacturers worldwide, Bilstein outfitted factory race cars with their shock absorbers to demonstrate their superior performance. This started an unparalleled record of motorsports success at racing venues the world over.

It was the racing success of Bilstein shocks at the famed Baja 1000 off-road race that eventually led to the formal presence of Bilstein in North America. Bilstein Corporation of America was established in 1972 with headquarters in San Diego, CA. An Eastern sales office and warehouse was soon added in Wallingford, CT.

After expanding their aftermarket and replacement shock business with a network of distributors and retailers in North America, Bilstein entered the domestic original equipment shock market in 1984. Working with General Motors, Bilstein was chosen as an option for the 1984 Chevrolet Corvette and the Chevy S-10 four-wheel drive truck models. This association with GM has blossomed into a program that now finds Bilstein shocks used as standard equipment or options on numerous models of General Motor vehicles in several GM Divisions. A Bilstein engineering and marketing office was opened in the Detroit area to coordinate the GM business. Bilstein of America then set up their first production facility in this country in Hamilton, OH in 1995 to supply their original equipment customers.

Bilstein Today:
A Dynamic Presence Within ThyssenKrupp Automotive Group

A corporate restructuring of August Bilstein GmbH of Ennepetal, Germany took place in 1988 with the purchase of the company by Hoesch AG. A subsequent merger of the Hoesch Group with Fried. Krupp AG in 1992 established the parent conglomerate Fried. Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp. In 1999 Fried. Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp merged with Thyssen AG to form ThyssenKrupp Automotive Group. Bilstein is now a wholly-owned subsidiary company of the ThyssenKrupp Automotive Group.

The group is a primary supplier to the automotive industry and, with their other subsidiaries, cover a wide spectrum of manufacturing from steel production to automation and communications technology among others. The amount of information and technology available to a company of this size is formidable and create an excellent basis for present and future product development including Bilstein suspension components.

The inter-company collaboration of data and technology within the Group produces synergetic effects which, on one hand, leads to consistent quality improvements of existing products and, on the other, to technological innovations in the classic Bilstein tradition.

It is within this framework that Bilstein will continue to expand and strengthen their function as a supplier of innovative technology and systems to the automotive industry.
